Renee, You are absolutely right; having a license for child care doesnt make it a great one, anymore than a drivers license makes you a good driver! However, those minimum state regulations are put into place as a guideline for providers to follow. That is why it is so important that parents be educated on what to look for and what to ask when placing their child in a center or someone's home. Parents need to be proactive in choosing a caregiver and find out as much about them as possible. 4C's website is a good place to start! There are checklists, quality indicators, and parent counselors to talk to.

I grew up the child of a firefighter so I am very aware of the dangers and precautions there. I also was a licensed life guard as a young adult so CPR and First Aid are also something I am aware of and KNOW how to administer.

I stayed home with my oldest until she went to KG then I worked again outside of the home during school hours. During the years I stayed home, I was a single mother, I provided care to only 2 other children, my home was spotless- safe and more appropriate than the daycare that I had tried to work at where the teachers and director would thump little ones on the head or face for crying REALLY? However when my ex decided to be nasty and have CS show up at my house unannounced saying that I didnt provide proper care for my child or the others I watched, they inspected the house and said they would have loved to have more homes licensed that were as cautious and prepared as I was.

Then when I decided to stop watching children and put my daughter in a before and after program in 4th grade, she came home crying several times that the teachers screamed alot....this was a Church based program non the less....the more I talked to the director and teachers the worse it got so of course, I pulled her out and quit my job. and Yes, I claimed my income, the return was well worth it when you considered the things you could itemize.

So, now although I did not run a licensed daycare in Ohio,I did for a time watch children again when I moved here. And again i filed taxes, my home was and still is very safe as I have a little one here - grandchild. I take her safety very seriously but I take the safety of others children even more so.

I never allowed visitors in my home when others children were with me. I would certianly have provided a background check FBI whatever on everyone in our household and I would have even allowed parents to do a medical check if they wanted.

I was a foster child, I know some system children end up being how they are treated or worse. But there are some of us who took the bad in our lives and vowed to make sure that any child we knew or came in contact with would be safe and loved. That is what made me care so much.

No once can license HOW YOU truly feel about kids or any of that, they can only say yes your home is safe and you have never had an issue involving kids etc. Well, daycares leave kids on buses, in locked buildings. Licensed providers abuse, neglect and USE the system to make money. So, really a license isnt going to make someone a better provider.

My grandbaby is in a Church setting now and we are having a wonderful wonderful experience.

Licenses are good but not everyone needs to have one,I think the law should NOT allow more than 2 other than your own children and a maximum of 4 children in an unlicensed home. There also needs to be a law that if you work, and you claim dependent children, you must prove where your child is when you are work, then the providers that get off not filing taxes wont be so many. If parents are held accountable for saying yes I did pay daycare then providers wouldnt be able to say they dont claim. Or if they say they dont claim, dont use them.

True, alot of people don't know that ANYONE can care for children in their homes without a license. Even on facebook I read comments from an irritated woman that she couldn't keep her house clean because she was keeping twelve children in her home! Well, four of them were at school, so technically she had eight, or maybe sixteen? And, her friend commented "how do you get them all to take a nap at the same time!" The woman added she had just agreed to keep two more, so now she's up to fourteen! Are you kidding me? Even a licensed preschool class can only have 24 and that's with two teachers. I can not imagine any one of those children thriving in such a setting. What are the parents that drop them off think? Let's stop the insanity. We need regulated home child care.

I am so sorry to hear of the terrible experiences of your grandchildren. How very painful, and also infuriating how the authorities handled it. You are so right that licensing does not guarantee safety. It only presents one (significant) line of defense against those who have no business caring for children. Licensing also helps well-intentioned but uninformed providers learn about such things as putting a baby on it's back to sleep, and the necessity for baby gates.
Some argue against licensing because "it gives a false sense of confidence." I contend that most people assume there is licensing even when there is not.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply and for sharing your family experiences.

Unfortunatly, this also happens in licensed homes. My 3 year old granddaughter was moliested in a licensed day care home. They chose to go with a state licensed provider because they are in the military and did not know anyone where they were stationed.
Her molester got away with it, even though a doctor and psychiatrist both said that she had been molested. My granddaughter also told them that he had hurt the babies too.The county there told them that instead of trying to get him arestted, they should worry about teaching their daughter not to let anyone touch her.

The county said that he was already in jail for drugs, and then just let it drop. I cringe when I think that he might be doing it again.

Then they were stationed in California and never heard anything else about it.

When the kids were older they were put in a daycare home for before and after school.
They were at dinner one day and their mom asked how the daycare baby got that big place on his cheek. My grandson said that the provider had thrown the baby along the carpet. My granddaughter also saw it. So they called the authorities and had to go to court and testify.

Later they saw the provider again and she had new kids.

By the way, she was also licensed.

I am a preschool teacher and I feel bad for parents that have to make these choices everyday when they don't have any other choices.

Unfortunely this has changed our lives completely.
I still get angry about it when I read things like this and my granddaughter is now 16.
So it can and does happen in regulated homes.

Now I'm just angry thinking about people getting away with this stuff.
Connie
By the way, I do think people should be regulated.
